The Dog Days of Summer

Dog Days bright and clear
Indicate a happy year;
But when accompanied by rain,
For better times, our hopes are vain.
                             ~~unknown

Named for the Dog Star, Sirius, the brightest star in the sky other than the sun. Ancient man believed the heat from both the sun and Sirius caused the mid-summer in the northern hemisphere to be so hot.  The sweltering heat and humidity have been the theme of many myths and stories that surround these days.
